Rogue River (2012)

One of the few things I enjoyed about this film was the basic story! Going to throw her father’s ashes into a river that was dear to her… but having her car stolen and running into a gentleman who agrees to give her a lift… there was a lot going on!
But I think it’s the kind of story that’s even more sympathetic when it’s a comedy-drama. Horror films have this annoying habit of disgusting people and taking away all hope.

A very average film, even… yes, I can say it’s pretty bad and, what’s more, doesn’t really stand out from the crowd. The characters, as usual, often act with little thought and the whole thing is fairly predictable. Still, I’ve seen worse… but not by much!

In the remote woods, beware of everything you might find. Especially people, of course! Once again, we know that the evil degenerate rednecks are lurking. Well, I’ve seen even more horrible feature films on this theme. Quite gripping and well acted (at least at first), it’s well worth a look for fans of kidnapping, chaining and psychological torture, as well as physical.

Well, since I personally didn’t really like this film, I’m not even going to try and see the other films by this director, Jourdan Mcclure, who also made Children of Sorrow. Fans beware!

There are a lot of inconsistencies in a film that ultimately relies more on its staging, which is as violent as it gets, than on its script. Add to that a main character who’s already tortured in the head and who you’re supposed to get attached to, but who you end up hating. With all that, it’s easy to end up with another failed horror film. And, alas, there are plenty of them!

If ever, three quarters of the dialogue is the lead actress crying. So, if you hate women or have absolutely no empathy, this is going to get boring for you! The only thing you’ll want to do during the film is tell her to ‘Shut the fuck up!!!’ as if she wasn’t already living the worst nightmare of her life. It’s really sad!

Michelle Page is apparently a regular in horror films. But she also had a tiny role in Single White Female 2 – The Psycho, which was a surprisingly good surprise, although I wouldn’t have bet on it!

This film will never become a cult! I don’t think there are many fans who want to worship it, see it regularly or say it’s the best of its kind.

There are moments of suspense that last quite a long time, even though the film is quite short. But I had a lot of questions: where does this couple come from, what happened to the family, what is their goal, etc.? Unfortunately, all our questions remain unanswered! Superficial script, really creepy film with no moral, and a totally disappointing and illogical ending where we see the main protagonist happy and at peace, when she’s in a totally unhealthy situation…

In short, another film I wouldn’t recommend!
But the ending isn’t totally devoid of interest. It’s just that it could be described as despicable and poetic, or foul but artistic.

In conclusion:

A film for insiders only. Rogue River takes us once again into a ruthless survival. Another one of those crazy bastards has fallen, and I’m sorry for her, but she’s going to be abused again, and this time the director doesn’t skimp on the injuries (both physical and psychological, as I said earlier). A little too much for my taste, but the whole thing will satisfy a small, well-informed audience.

As far as I’m concerned, this film is rather a disaster and I can understand why it’s one of its only directorial effort! But the big question is: did anyone really believe in this project when it was being made?

Rating: 1 out of 5.
