Teen Titans Go! – To The Movies (2018)
I had an extraordinary time. I already love the Teen Titans cartoon in general. The humour is fabulous. It’s as good as Super Nanas or DC Super Hero Girls.
It’s incredible how many winks there are in this animated feature!
There are nods to Cartoon Network, Warner Bros, Marvel (including cameos by Stan Lee, Deadpool, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy), Back to the Future during a trip back in time, the 80s in general…
You can see pretty much everyone here: Supergirl, Plastic Man, Flash, Batman, Aquaman, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Zatanna Zatara…
The songs are great fun and easier to digest than in the Walt Disney films.
Stan Lee dubbed his own voice, while Nicolas Cage… dubbed Superman! Which means that the former didn’t take himself too seriously to do a stint at DC. And neither was Cage, given that he doesn’t sound too disappointed, frustrated or angry that his own (long-haired) Superman never saw the light of day.
Here’s the story:
The Teen Titans, especially Robin, feel like every major superhero is getting their own movie, except them! But Robin, their de facto leader, is determined to do something about it and be seen as a star rather than just a sidekick. If only they could catch the eye of Hollywood’s hottest director.
With a few wacky ideas and a song in their hearts, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain that their dream will come true. But when the group is drastically sidetracked by a super-villain and his maniacal plan to conquer the Earth, things take a turn for the worse. The team’s friendship and fighting spirit crumble, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans in jeopardy!
At some point, the film starts to run out of steam. But it makes up for it. What’s more, it has its touching moments too. A great moment of animation!
The humour is scathing, no-holds-barred, and very subtle most of the time. A great time for children, without too much violence, and a treat for open-minded adults who haven’t stupidly let their inner child die. I could never say how much I enjoyed what I saw, nor could I take the stupid risk of spoiling everything!
I’ll take the time to see the next three. The DC Super Hero Girls are in the fourth one. As for the next one, it seems to me that they’re humouring the contrast with the Teen Titans cartoon, which is much more serious.
If you’re interested, here are some other animated features I’ve loved: The Batman vs. Dracula (2005), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – TMNT (2007), Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019), Justice League – War (2014).
Otherwise, I really enjoyed Justice League – The New Frontier (2008), Justice League – Doom (2012), Justice League Dark (2017) and The Death and Return Of Superman (2019).
