The film is also known, particularly in German-speaking countries, as ‘Eine wilde Nacht’, which means ‘A Wild Night’, but also as “Threesome” or ‘Eine wilde Nacht In New York’. In short, all these titles are equally valid!
It’s always amusing to hear someone say in a film, ‘I never wanted to be an actress!’
There are other lines worth mentioning, such as, ‘Men want power, women seek love, and children want independence.’ A line that is meant to be much more philosophical than it actually is, I suppose. But it’s one of the most interesting in the film. That’s saying something!
There’s also: ‘I think he was very much in love and he asked me to marry him. So, of course, I left him immediately for another bloke!’ Quite pathetic, but, alas, quite realistic. How many people still react like that?
‘God is dead… and nobody cares!’, ‘Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful!’ These little phrases strung together make you think this film is a gem!
But it’s not!!!
It’s not a film, because you could say there’s no script! It’s a kind of reality TV show set in New York, with Keanu Reeves freewheeling and playing the fool. Some say that he’s really like that and that he always looks lost, so he’s at his most natural here. That said, I don’t necessarily mean that in a pejorative way, because I have immense respect for these actors who are passionate about films and who seem to be some of the coolest guys on the planet.
Unfortunately, as far as the film is concerned, it’s very difficult to get to the end, because it’s so nonsensical and painful. It’s not that rare to see such flat films, but it’s rarely a pleasure. It’s nothingness punctuated by a few sex scenes. Obviously, they had to keep the viewer awake!
No, the whole thing is profoundly boring. While I sensed an intention to avoid clichés in this film, with a guy who decides to use a camera to capture the intimate moments of his entourage (two crazy and taciturn girls), I feel that the director has missed the mark with his film.
The dialogue is flat, the magic doesn’t work. We want to get inside the characters’ heads, we want the film to take us through the twists and turns of the three protagonists’ tortuous lives, we want the evocation of a painful past to grab us by the gut, but it just doesn’t work. It would have been necessary to delve directly into the torment of the actor/director, and unfortunately, the charismatic actor from Speed, The Matrix and My Own Private Idaho is not enough to save the film. We can still recognise the intention… even if I have the distinct feeling that I’ve wasted an hour and a half.
A film for anyone who wants to see Bojana Novakovic in her knickers. Yes, it’s a pretty weak argument to attract viewers, but it will work for some. Note that she smokes a lot, snorts a lot of cocaine and burps after giving a blow job. And that’s something I’m not likely to forget! You’ll also see Adelaide Clemens’ breasts when she gets out of the shower to brush her teeth.
Although I appreciate the casting, it’s a big no from me, and I wouldn’t blame you if you avoided this film or watched it on fast forward!
