I Spit on Your Grave (2010)

Well…
Let me be clear: back in the day, I didn’t really think a ‘rape and revenge’ film could be any good! Just like teen films, B and Z movies, torture porn, porn films, and so on. I could add superhero films to the list, but I don’t feel like it. As far as I’m concerned, there are some really good ones out there. Anyway…

Sarah Butler’s best-known film. The one that revealed her true acting talents.

So, it’s despicable, with some unbearable scenes. Some will find the first half unwatchable, whilst others will think the second half is even worse!

The fact is, if people commit unforgivable and disgusting acts, you don’t really feel sorry for them when they suffer the same fate. Unless you’re a sensitive soul, of course. In that case, I reckon a bullet to the head or the electric chair would do the trick, as long as you look away so as not to see any slime, blood or any other fluid oozing out of the body. This also applies to the second instalment, as well as the third part which rounds off the trilogy.

I hadn’t seen the original version of this film when I first watched it. But today, I can say that this Day of the Woman (1978) is truly rubbish and nothing but sickening. The most twisted and sadistic among us obviously preferred it, but too bad for their mushy brains and hearts blackened by hatred.

Sometimes I think to myself that perhaps I should tackle these films before the end of the year, just so I can start the new year free and cleansed of this unhealthy filth!

An ultra-violent, powerful film that’s unjust by human standards.

Definitely not suitable for everyone.

Here’s a review from someone who clearly isn’t very sensitive: ‘I didn’t think this film would surprise me.
The story itself is well put together and it doesn’t descend into gratuitous violence with ultra-violent, gory images.
But the subject matter remains very violent and horrific for a woman!
I recommend it.
Enjoy the film!!!’

In any case, you reap what you sow… a well-deserved storm…

I Spit on Your Grave 2 (2013)

I Spit on Your Grave… for a second time!

You wonder what on earth they’re going to come up with this time!

A sequel without the same lead actress?
Will it be the same story, just with different people?
Well, yes!
But it holds together quite well…

I just refused to give any of these ‘Rape & Revenge’ films more than two stars, on principle. They’re the sort of films you watch out of voyeurism, a craving for thrills, and because you’re actually addicted to the thrills that horror and porn give you! But years have gone by and I’ve come to realise that the first film in this trilogy is actually quite good.

The actress is brilliant once again. She comes across as adorable, almost perfect, for the first 20 minutes. Then it all kicks off: she gets beaten to a pulp – literally and figuratively. She’s raped and urinated on. She’s left for dead after they try to bury her. And she turns into a veritable beast out for revenge.

For its genre, it’s a good film!
But I wouldn’t necessarily want to watch it again one day…

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

I Spit on Your Grave 3 (2015)

I Spit on Your Grave… for the third time!

This third instalment is different: on one side, you’ve got the rapists, out on the streets; on the other, the rape victims. The rapists are everywhere, whilst the victims go to a centre to try and rebuild their lives.

How far will the cruelty go before it leads to madness? Or is it madness that makes people cruel sometimes…

It’s worth noting that there is, however, one striking scene featuring a woman who performs oral sex on a scumbag… and takes the opportunity to cut off his manhood – yes, you read that right!

It’s up to you to decide whether this is your sort of film, whether you have a morbid curiosity, or whether you’d simply prefer to give it a miss.

Sarah Butler is back, much to our delight.

In the next one, she’ll be gone again. Yes, there’s a fourth one… but it’s so rubbish that I consider this a trilogy. As it is, they’re getting worse and worse with each instalment.

It’s up to you too to decide whether these films are anti-male or whether all these criminal men should be punished more severely. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion… but not wanting to have an opinion is, in itself, an opinion!

Note: one of Boris Vian’s best-known books had the same title and was published in… 1946!!!

Boris Vian, born on 10 March 1920 in Ville-d’Avray (Seine-et-Oise) and died on 23 June 1959 in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, was a French writer, poet, lyricist, engineer, singer, music critic, jazz musician (trumpeter) and artistic director. Yes, all that!

This novel, like several others, was first published under the name ‘Vernon Sullivan’, with Vian presenting himself as the translator.

The story, like Vian’s other works written under the pseudonym Sullivan, is set in the southern United States. It depicts the revenge of a mixed-race man following the lynching of his brother, in order to denounce the racism suffered by Black Americans in their daily lives at the hands of white people.

I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu (2019)

Meir Zarchi is back! And I’m certainly not pleased about it. It’s as if someone had told me that Tom Six was back with a Human Centipede 4!!!

Zarchi is already the director of the utterly rubbish Don’t Mess with My Sister, but above all he’s the man who created the appalling and despicable Day of the Woman (1978), of course! What on earth happened? This chap was no doubt unhappy with the remake of his film and its sequels… so he must have forced himself to pick up his camera again – even though it was surely safely tucked away – thinking he could finally retire! Alas… fate had other ideas.

Right… let’s be quick and to the point! I really don’t want to waste any time dwelling on this rubbish.

Verdict:

  • far too long
  • a rubbish story
  • sub-par actors

An utterly pointless and appallingly bad film.

By far one of the worst films I’ve seen in 44 years of being a film buff!

Bury it or burn it! Either would do just fine.

I’ve seen a lot of rubbish, but this takes the biscuit! Nothing, absolutely nothing is any good in this film – not the actresses, not the dialogue, not the plot, not the special effects, nothing at all. It’s a massive disappointment.

Day of the Woman (1978)

Also known as Blood Angel or I Spit on Your Grave

Day of the Woman: Rubbish!

It was an incredibly tough and painful experience to watch it right to the end. But that was less because of the unbearable subject matter than because of the quality of the film.

The lead actress is gorgeous!
That’s it!
I could easily stop there…

But alas, I’m going to have to carry on anyway!

This film makes absolutely no sense and lacks any coherence. To think it was made at the same time as I was born. It’s mad to think that art this bad already existed when I was born.

At first, I thought to myself, ‘This film is the same age as me, and when I’m dead, it’ll still be around!’ But on reflection, I realised it’s surely been consigned to oblivion, and that people discovering it today will find it laughable or boring.

Admittedly, the subject matter is extremely shocking. But its sluggish pace and excessive length make it an absolutely dreadful film. I can easily see why they made a remake of it. In fact, I’d have given the remake one or two more stars if I’d known the original was this bad.

Nice setting, pretty actress – and that’s it!

The other actors are rubbish, and the French dubbing makes it even worse.

Throw it away or give it a miss – you’ve got a choice!

What’s more… I forgot to mention that the dialogue is daft.

The film has aged terribly.
But was it ever relevant, even for a single day?
I’m not talking about the subject matter, but rather the way things were portrayed here.

A taboo, cruel and despicable subject is used for the sole purpose of pandering to voyeurism or causing shock.

The film deserves negative marks!!!
