CIEL – Movement (EP/2020) I love everything I’ve heard from this English band. All twenty tracks, excluding and including their four EPs. CIEL manage to mix some of my favourite styles into a really tasty cocktail.

The information on the Bandcamp explains: “With moody, magnetising Alt-Pop fusing Shoegaze with Post-Punk, Rock Noir and Dream Pop, ‘Movement’ revolves around a turning point, both physical and mental, in the life of Dutch frontwoman Michelle Hindriks, who has returned to her adopted home of Brighton and found the inspiration to write the songs that make up the band’s debut EP. Comprising the acclaimed singles ‘The Shore’ and ‘Days’, the trio’s EP highlights their early promise and intrinsic mystique, with praise from the online (Clash, Dork, Gigwise) and on-air (BBC 6 Music) communities.

Singer Hindriks explains in detail the release of their EP: ‘The whole EP is about moving away from a more introspective period in which I felt quite removed from other people and entering a new phase of my life in which I’ve been able to open up. We’re releasing this EP at a time when we’re forced to distance ourselves from each other, but I feel more connected to the people around me now than I did before.”

In any case, it’s a great introduction to the world of music. Their EPs are gems. Let’s hope they release albums soon. And I’ll definitely be going to see them if they come to my region.
