Revenge (2017) Such rubbish! It’s quite incredible to be able to create such dreck, such nauseating works. Director Coralie Fargeat can now join the ranks of the worst directors alongside Yorgos Lanthimos and Rhys Frake-Waterfield, among others. She made The Substance (2024) seven years after that film. If only she’d stopped, or never started. I think she should retrain instead of doing stupid, pointless damage to cinema. Because to have such a lack of talent to write such a screenplay, to create such insipid dialogue and direct two of the worst turnips, you really need to have a gift! But at least in The Substance, the actors had charisma and acted well. That’s not the case here.

This film joins the worst films of the genre, most of which are already quite bad. It’s just as bad as ‘Day of the Woman’, i.e. the first ‘I Spit On Your Grave (1978).’

Very brutal, bloody, crude and uncompromising. Revenge is a rather gruesome revenge thriller, with very distinctive direction, interesting at times, but the pace is rather slow and bad. The direction is far from successful or stylish.

The same can be said for the camerawork and electronic music, and the actors’ performances are unconvincing. And, unfortunately, the film isn’t at all exciting, and just goes on and on. It’s also a shame that it lacks depth of character and dialogue. The film is also lame in terms of credibility and logic. It could have been comical if it didn’t take itself so seriously.

In the end, it’s just another brutal revenge slasher, where the lead actress, raped and thrown into the abyss, takes cold, uncompromising revenge. A woman as lead actress and, of course, always more than half-naked, it’s wonderful for men or lesbians who don’t have a lot of grey matter. They’ll be entertained, they’ll feel like fish in water and they’ll even find the artistic aspect extraordinary. They’ll say that this film has merit, that ‘it demands courage and respect’! Which is not at all the case for me.

The director has left her mark on the film… and that’s what’s most frightening! Here we get an idea of what she’s up to behind the scenes, with all the exaggerated noises (including the sounds of her mouth eating). These are very often the worst films for me, the ones where the directors are more important than the film itself and where you can see and feel, in every other sequence, the author’s touch. This film isn’t even one of those that you can still watch when there’s nothing else on at the end of the evening, as a consolation prize. Basically, it’s a complete waste of money. Pity about the money wasted, thrown down the drain.

The images could have been magnificent, but the details are not at all realistic or pleasant to watch. To see a sexy woman taking the law into her own hands, with slow-motion shots, the camera always behind her buttocks or plunging into her breasts, is to make a mockery of the strong and important message that is hypocritically intended to be conveyed in this kind of film. It’s shameful!

Because rape and personal vengeance are really important, crucial subjects, and not just an open door to make money by shocking people, for the pleasure of the most twisted and unhealthy minds, who will, alas, be even more inspired.
