The Grey (2011) This film reminded me what a masterpiece is in cinema! And it makes me even happier to see so many negative reviews for this film. Why is that? Either because I know that these people never appreciate anything, or because the films that these people consider to be masterpieces are relatively lame, bad, failed, and pointless films for me. So the balance is perfectly in place! 😀 The Universe is perfectly balanced!!!
In this film, there are fights at the beginning, and you might think that, given that it’s a macho, manly film (there are hardly any women, at least not in the main roles!), there will be brawls throughout. But in reality, we see several facets of these survivors. Both the good sides of the bad guys and the weaknesses of those who seem the most reckless. So I’m really speaking for myself here ;-P
I don’t think there are any clichés in this film. There isn’t the person you think is dead who reappears to add to the danger or to save the others, there isn’t the “man who is stronger than the beast”. There’s no love story to get in the way, no romanticism in this struggle for survival. There’s no exaggerated gore, and we don’t see every death in detail. And each tragedy has its own story. I’m told that the wolf is my totem animal. So I wonder if there are many people who have been killed by their totem animals!
A very good thriller. And I repeat my first sentence: This film reminded me what a masterpiece is in cinema! Because I didn’t have to keep wondering if the ending would be good to know if it was a good film. No! I lived the adventure with these men, I felt what they felt. I laughed, I was angry, I was gripped. I got what I expected from a film like this and I enjoyed it immensely. Even during the long stretches, I wasn’t bored for a second. That’s it! And even the ending leaves a lot to the imagination.
Joe Carnahan directed this film perfectly. Ridley Scott must have helped produce it. As for Liam Neeson, my respect for the man continues to grow. A hell of an actor in one of his best roles and best films. Dermot Mulroney, also in a leading role, and that adds a lot if you like him. I don’t think I knew the others (Dallas Roberts, Joe Anderson, James Badge Dale, Frank Grillo…), but I really enjoyed this fine cast of actors.
See you soon for more adventures!!!
