Bruce Almighty (2003) is another film I saw when it came out in cinemas. I didn’t like it very much at the time, but I think I’m enjoying it a bit more now that I’ve pseudo matured. There are some very good moments and some excellent messages throughout the film. However, it’s also a bit long and heavy, and the film struggles to get going, in my opinion.

Jim Carrey, in his role as a jaded, drunken clown, is true to himself, if not true to God. Morgan Freeman, who was already perfect in the role of Nelson Mandela, is just priceless here in the role of God.

Would this be the second black man, after the one who played Dan Endiablé? Probably not, but it’s still historic!

Jennifer Aniston is not an incredible actress. Although she’s essential to Friends, she’s not necessarily essential to film. I don’t think that without her beauty, she’s worth much, without wishing to be unkind. She’s managed to distance herself from her Rachel persona, even if it’s difficult for fans; she’s doing well, but she’s not irreplaceable. You’ve got it: she’s the actress I like least in this film!

Steve Carell, on the other hand, is always a real pleasure to see again. Even if he’s as detestable as you could wish here, there’s always something touching about him, whatever he does. This actor is hilarious. I didn’t know him when the film came out… and it’s even better to see him again now.

And, finally, the late Philip Baker Hall plays a very jovial role here, unlike his landmark roles in Hard Eight or Magnolia! I noticed yesterday that he’s also in Zodiac, again in a great role. This actor was one of the great talents.

This film reminds me of Click… but I prefer Click!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5.
