The Hole (2001) It’s crazy and not really explainable… for the moment! But the more I see this film, the less I like it! Maybe that’s its secret: you only have to see it once. Because you are indeed bluffed and I understand all those who gave it 5 stars. I would have also done it when I saw it in the cinema and came out enchanted. That’s probably why I wanted to see it again. But when I saw it again, I was less impressed. And as I wanted to find the pleasure of the first time, I saw it again, but in vain.

Thora Birch is still a good actress. But she doesn’t really exude joie de vivre. The very last scene is very mean, unhealthy, almost terrifying and very memorable. It’s hard to forget. The first time, it gave me a slap. The second time, I waited for it. The third time, even more impatiently… as if it was the only good thing! No, really: there are inconsistencies, unnecessary scenes, length, ridiculousness. There’s no gore and that’s one of the good things. But in the end, I’m not sure I really understand the motives for doing so much harm, even if I feel bad about it.

I don’t know what it is about this film, but I think there’s too much that doesn’t go the way I want it to, or the way I want it to. So… the two tips will remain: a film not to be seen twice, nor to be seen on TV.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
