Case 39 (2009) Of course, there are those who are jaded and will find this film predictable. I really wouldn’t want to be in their shoes!!! Imagine never feeling any thrills, shocks or tension! To say that the case is clear, that Case 39 is unfortunately too boring because it is (too) predictable and that you probably need to see it once before filing it away in the archives.
Renée Zellweger and the little girl from Silent Hill, The Cabin in the Woods, and Twilight: Eclipse, Jodelle Ferland, don’t act badly at all. No, in fact, the whole quartet is an excellent cast! It’s a real pleasure to see Ian McShane, Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, and Bradley Cooper in the same film. All good actors!
An entertaining feature film, but the shocking moments are repeated many times. But hey, there are far worse films out there! This one really pleasantly surprised me. It must have been one of the best horror thrillers of that year, exciting, disturbing, and scary.
It’s always nice to see Ms. Zellweger doing her job so well. She’s also very pleasant to watch in interviews, very funny. One can be very skeptical, especially if one is stuck on Bridget Jones’s Diary, who, let’s face it, is a rather annoying character. Renée’s talent in playing her is undeniable.
I quickly got hooked. The plot is good, as is the script. There is a rather shocking scene in the first twenty minutes, but when you watch an excerpt, you might think it’s a scene from the end, when in fact it’s only the beginning of the story.
The film raises many questions: would you be willing to risk your life and your job to save someone? What if that someone suddenly turned out to be your worst nightmare? What would you do? Would you do whatever it takes to get rid of them? Illusions are everywhere!
There are lots of twists and turns, especially at the end. I was desperately hoping that the film would end in a way that I found satisfactory. And fortunately, it did.
When you lose everything and are full of trauma, how do you heal? Who do you believe? What if the people you thought were the worst were only trying to help you? The most fragile and innocent are not who we think they are.
What are your greatest fears?
The end credits roll with Nedeshda Brennicke’s magnificent song, Army of Angels. The actors’ names appear while the final scene is still playing. Then the screen goes black, the credits continue… and I realized that I wasn’t frustrated and that I had had a very good time.
