Lee, a food delivery driver, is addicted to gambling and heavily in debt. He is making a delivery in the snowy, icy countryside of the Minnesota Wilderness when he is chased by a crazed snow plough driver. For reasons unknown, and totally unbeknown to Lee, the snowplough driver seems intent on eliminating him. A perilous chase then begins, confronting him with deadly situations and forcing him to outwit his only implacable pursuer.
As you will have gathered, this is another film that follows in the footsteps of the excellent Duel (1971). The year before, in 2024, we were treated to Cold Road, which was also a very good film. Yes, like this one, it took place in the snow.
There was a time when it was hard to tell the difference between English, American and Australian films, but now it’s hard to tell the difference between them and Nordic or German films. Well, one thing’s for sure: a French film will always stand out from the crowd. But that’s not necessarily a compliment! 😉
Cold Road was a Canadian thriller starring Roseanne Supernault, a half-breed, half-Native North American woman. The film featured a dog in one of the lead roles.
Delivery Run is a Finnish film starring a goldfish. It’s less expressive, that’s for sure! And the main character’s attachment to the goldfish is sure to annoy many people, especially those who don’t like animals or have never owned a goldfish.
And that’s not the only thing that’s annoying: the main character himself is downright unbearable! He comes across as unbalanced, lost, always behind in his life and dreamy. But let’s face it, he’s very lucky in all his misery and misfortune. And this story is sure to make him grow even more!
There are the usual recipes for this kind of film. The suspense isn’t unbearable here, the direction does what it can with the means at hand, the actors aren’t mind-blowing and the characters aren’t necessarily endearing.
Duel was new, original, terrifying and a masterstroke, especially for a first film. Cold Road is not as good. And this one is even worse than Cold Road. At this stage and at this speed, in two years’ time we’ll be treated to a completely rubbish film! Which is a shame, because there’s plenty to do, even if the concept already seems worn out. There won’t be two Duels. And even if they do remake it, it won’t dethrone the first. And they’ll really have to make the right calculations to breathe new life into it, give it a fresh look and avoid making a pointless remake. Yes, I’m thinking in particular of these new versions of Fright Night or Flatliners.
Delivery Run is a good little diversion, ideal if you don’t have much time, if you want to end the evening with a short film without thinking. Because if you start arguing about the inconsistencies, you’re going to have to do it until the wee hours of the morning!
It’s worth noting that the concept is taken from Duel, yes, that the lorry is a snowplough, admittedly,
and that the film adds elements of the slasher. A criminal ploughman is quite something!
