The Monster Squad. A horror/comedy about a group of teens who save a small town from Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Mummy and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. This 80s film was very entertaining. I had a lot of fun. Nice actors and a good story. A bit like The Goonies…

In fact, it’s hard not to think of The Goonies!

I’ll tell you why: Here we have the playboy, the overweight guy and the group leader called Sean. Whereas Mickey, the leader of The Goonies, was played by… Sean Astin!!!

There’s also the adult helper and the pretty girl next door! As for the monsters, not only are they well done, they’re also very faithful to what they represent in their respective stories/movies. They haven’t been put together with the intention of being changed. All five have their interesting, funny or scary parts.

What I find incredible is that this film stands out from the crowd! Usually, 80’s films are sometimes cheesy and hard to watch for me. But here… I was totally thrilled.

I’ve waited over thirty years to see a film like this without knowing it already existed. Created in ’87, no less.

Just to give you an idea: Goonies was made just two years before that, in ’85.

Rocky 4 dates from the year before ’86 and Masters of the Universe (both starring Dolph Lundgren!) dates from the same year.

The following year, ’88, saw the appearance of Beetlejuice! And in ’89, we saw the first Batman.

And that’s it.

Monster Squad is very well-paced, the music is good, one of the monsters has two lives…

And I could just go on and on !

My rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
