Significant Other (2022) An obsession from elsewhere ! All right!

This time round, I’m embarking on a Maika Monroe cycle. I’ve decided to see at least five of her films. It’s highly likely that I’ve just found the most rubbish. At least, I hope so! I’m not a mega-fan of It Follows (2014), even though it’s one of the important films that finally breathed something new into horror cinema. Watcher (2022) is a film that could have been a masterpiece if it hadn’t been ruined by the ending. I’ll probably be seeing The Guest (2014), Greta (2018) and The Stranger (2020), anyway.

That said, I wonder why this actress always looks so jaded! As for Jake Lacy, he’s great as the perfect husband. In fact, the couple are quite endearing. The actor reminded me a little of the great Tom Cruise, but especially of the excellent Nicholas Hoult. Let’s move on to the film… which really sucks! So… no need to talk about it. All you need to know is that the beginning is interesting, even if there are always a few moments that are hard to get your head around.

There’s one or two touching moments, then one that made me really sad. Then… there’s a plot twist… and that’s it! I didn’t believe it for a second. From then on, there was half an hour to go and all I wanted was for it to end.The craziest thing is that it just gets worse and worse.

Everything that could have remained subtle becomes gory. And the nice lines at the end won’t save the film. I didn’t even feel like paying attention. Ultimate blasphemy: they dared to put David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ in such a turnip! But that’s not all: there are two directors for this catastrophic film, which is even less than nothing.

Dan Berk & Robert Olsen are proof that sometimes you have to team up to make something even worse than the worst.
