The Stranger (2020) I’m not a mega fan of Maika Monroe, but I like her and have enjoyed seeing some of her films such as It Follows (2014), The Guest (2014) and the psychological thriller Watcher (2022). Here, I really liked her acting. But the film is still quite exaggerated… and just like in The Guest, she manages to turn the situation on its head, even though we don’t believe it at all. Well… I’m willing to believe that despair forces us to rise above ourselves and find solutions to get by. But it seems hard to believe.
The Stranger is a series the length of a full-length film. Each episode (13 in all) lasts no more than ten minutes. This means that I have suspenseful moments every 6, 8 or 10 minutes. Some people have been able to see it as a film, without interruption. But it’s interesting to see it in its original form with its cuts.
Avan Jogia is rather annoying in this role. I hope he’s not always like this! On the other hand, Dane DeHaan is impeccable! It was a role for him. An actor we’ve seen in both Amazing Spider-Man films as Harry Osborn / Green Goblin, Chronicle (his second film) has a very good story, but also some unbearable found footage. But it’s especially A Cure for Wellness that’s worth seeing for any fan of horrific psychological thrillers.
The Stranger is a moment, but it leaves some questions unanswered. And you don’t necessarily want to watch it again to understand.
