Slotherhouse (2023) Oh, my Gosh! I wish I could have told you that this movie is here to tide us over until Gremlins 3 finally comes out one day! I wish I could proudly say that this film doesn’t take itself too seriously. Unfortunately, it’s quite the opposite: there’s absolutely nothing to take seriously in this film. As a result, I had the distinct impression that I’d been taken for a ride.
On the pretext that I live in a time when people have no brains, they want me to swallow anything? We, too, can make films by putting whatever comes into our heads and believe we’ve just made an avant-garde masterpiece. Besides, I’ve never liked films about sororities.
I have to admit that everything that followed or was inspired by the extraordinary Gremlins (which it somewhat resembles) is pretty much a dud! Whether it’s Ghoulies (which followed very closely on its heels), Critters or the disastrous Gremlin’s Curse.
This movie could have been really good. But it’s all over the place, without a hint of embarrassment. It’s not even remotely close to Gremlins, which remains the undisputed masterpiece to this day. It’s so much fun that it quickly becomes tiresome, and the closer you get to the end, the more you want it to end quickly.
When everything is illogical, it’s no longer art. It’s not enough to do just anything to make a successful absurdist film. It’s not enough to avoid CGI and go back to good old-fashioned tricks to make a good film. Everything that’s really fun ends up being really heavy here. It’s just another way of dumbing down the viewer, who’s already being taken for a fool. Because, in the end, if it’s really the times that want this, there’s no need to prove that artificial intelligence has eclipsed real intelligence.
I hope Matthew Goodhue doesn’t make another film! We didn’t make a comic superhero movie about a guy who gets bitten by a sloth and inherits his powers. Instead, we went straight for a horror movie! If the film had been intended as a parody, it would have succeeded. But since that’s not really the case, it’s a failure.
