Cobweb (2023) Another film that goes off in all directions and destroys its immense potential. The film’s pacing is ultra-good, so there’s never a dull moment. At least, not at first. It wasn’t until the end that I started asking myself questions like:
- What? Is this how it ends?
- Is this what it’s all about?
When the film started, I was hooked, immediately captivated, very intrigued.
But the more it went on, the more my mind said: “Okay, I think I understand the plot. Now… where are we going with all this?” Then, I quickly got worried, telling myself that: provided it doesn’t get ridiculous and provided the ending is amazing.
Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with the ending! Despite the fact that the film plays with a lot of fear, that at moments when you’re expecting “jump scares”, the film keeps you on the edge of your seat for a while, it ended up blinding me even before the last twenty minutes. There are plenty of details I couldn’t believe, so many inconsistencies and over-exaggeration. It’s a real shame & pity.
There were plenty of good ideas, though.
Even the kids, the two main ones, the hero and his rival “the villain”, don’t play very well. There are actors who mesmerize us, but there are also those on whom we wonder all the way through whether they’re coherent, natural or not. And that’s not a good sign.
And the coup de grâce is that the ending is totally abrupt. And very frustrating, too, with no subtlety whatsoever!
The excellent actress Lizzy Caplan was already in the disastrous Cloverfield (2008). She’ll have to choose her films better.
As for the producer of “It”, he’s screwed up again!
