All About Nina (2018) This film gave me the opportunity to discover a bit about the actor/rapper Common (previously Common Sense). Here, he plays the most endearing, reassuring and pleasant person.
Yes, because Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays a rather tortured actress, with small morals, who is searching for herself and who provokes a lot. Once again, her acting is impeccable. But I was expecting a really funny, slightly light film. I wasn’t expecting an artist whose life isn’t all rosy, but who at least has a good sense of humour. Alas, we end up with a feminist, in the wrong sense of the word, i.e. one who says bad things about men and takes her revenge on stage.
Nina is a comedian with crude gags, funny at times, but heavy-handed. We’re dealing with someone who says she doesn’t go to bed easily, but who drinks a lot and, once she’s confident, she acts on it and the next day ends up saying she’s bumped into another asshole. And she gets her revenge on stage in her show. By being like that, always angry, we inevitably end up taking it out on those who don’t deserve it, those who haven’t done anything to us or, worse still, who have even tried to help us.
So… the messages are interesting. But the film isn’t really! It misses the mark. I saw it a few weeks ago. I almost would have given it 3 stars then, especially for the actors. But I know I wouldn’t get any incredible pleasure out of seeing this film again.
