Crazy!
I wrote this review on April 4, 2021: This is completely crazy!
I must have some serious memory lapses due to post-traumatic stress… but that’s another story! 😉
The thing is… I was really looking forward to seeing this movie… and now that I’m here writing my review, I see and realize that I’d already written one! Totally crazy, I tell you!
And not for a single moment did I realize I’d already seen it. That’s how bad it was!
Basically, I was apparently almost as bored as the first time, and rereading my previous review, I realize it’s still very much on point for me.
The flashbacks—“one month ago,” “one week ago”—break the rhythm. Because this movie is slow and tries to come across as more subtle than it actually is, given its staging and direction. That said, the book must be great. So I find myself thinking, “too bad,” but also, “oh well”!
Emily Blunt is still great, the other actors are still good… but this movie just isn’t.
And my first review was written on August 23, 2018:
Almost as boring as its title! Written by BiboZ The actors are good… but honestly… I would have preferred her to witness a murder or an act of violence from the train rather than a mundane story of deception at its core. Sure, the murder happens later, but it comes with another heavy dose of moralizing: alcohol is bad!
No kidding!!!
The character psychology is well done, too. Which means it’s not a total flop. The husband, a womanizer,
the therapist, a pretty decent guy, but one who gives in to temptation,
the three inseparable women with their stories of affairs, love, and past romantic entanglements… The things that didn’t really happen are well portrayed. All the manipulation is rather subtle.
The way the stories intertwine is pretty good, too. But the film’s slow pace makes it sink into boredom rather than genuine suspense.
It’s funny—the more I write, the more I think about this movie, the more interesting and positive aspects I find in it. It seems the film’s pace is really what I didn’t like.
