Switch (1991)

Too late! 😦

On 16 December 2016, I wrote:

“I watched this film 25 years too late!
It’s aged well, but I found myself bored rather than entertained.

Still, I have no doubt that the subject matter is very good and that Ellen Barkin is a very good actress.
But I didn’t really get into it. Everything that was well done and genuinely funny ended up annoying me and making me want the film to end as quickly as possible. What a shame!

That said, I’ll give it two stars, as the film was surely good in its day; the ending moved me and I found it quite beautiful. What’s more, it’s always a pleasure to see Jimmy Smits.

There you go!”

An original premise, since then copied countless times, but an uneven script and gags that rarely hit the mark. Not a very enjoyable film, and it really lacks something to make it gripping.

Here’s a review to complement mine: “A potentially interesting story, but directed by a lazy Blake Edwards, who struggles to string the gags together with any rhythm and subjects us to an overly moralising ending. Ellen Barkin, in the lead role, carries the film all on her own.”

Rating: 2 out of 5.
