Monster Island (2004) is hilarious!!!
This is an American-Canadian TV film directed by Jack Perez.
It’s absolutely rubbish, but it doesn’t take itself seriously either.
Z-grade special effects.
And yet! The great Mary Elizabeth Winstead (in every sense of the word!) is in it. So, if there’s anything of interest in this film, it’s definitely her – and certainly not Carmen Electra!
No, I’m joking: Carmen’s quite funny here and plays herself.
Mary Elizabeth was the only actress destined for a successful career afterwards.
Two years later, she appeared in The Ring 2 and three years before Final Destination 3.
The special effects are clearly a tribute to old-school special effects, particularly those of Ray Harryhausen. In fact, Adam West (the 1960s Batman) plays a character here called Dr Harryhausen! Yes, it really goes that far!!!
Given that this film was produced by MTV & Trimark, you really can’t expect much from it. But I think this film is my favourite B-movie, even though I hate B-movies. The humour is quite funny, although some of the characters are rather over-the-top.
Basically: a pleasant, light-hearted watch.
The end credits are brilliant, as you get to see all the actors again, but also the monsters and giant insects.
It’s worth noting that this film is called L’Île des insectes mutants in French! Which just means: The Island of Mutant Insects.
