An Argentine-Spanish drama thriller, co-written and directed by Alejandro Montiel, released in 2018. It is an adaptation of the Argentine novel Cornelia by Florencia Etcheves (2016).
It’s hard to completely hate this film, but impossible to love it!
The story isn’t too bad, but the plot is figured out quite quickly, which spoils the interest. Overall, it holds together with decent performances and passable direction. The two lead actresses, Luisana Lopilato and Amaia Salamanca, stand out quite a bit.
After a promising start, the film starts to falter. The main problem is that I don’t really understand the characters’ motivations, leaving a whole host of questions with no answers whatsoever. As for the plot contrivances, some are so obvious they’re laughable. I won’t give anything away!
It’s not too boring, but, honestly, when the script falls flat, so does the film…
I came across this review: “This noir thriller suffers from an uneven pace that never quite manages to make it gripping, and plot elements that are a bit too convoluted. It’s hard to understand the characters’ motivations and actions, and why they behave the way they do. The few, incomplete explanations provided don’t make the whole thing coherent – and what’s worse, The plot twist that was meant to be the main surprise is guessed very quickly.”
It actually matches my own quite closely!
In conclusion:
A minor crime thriller with a sense of déjà vu. The investigation into the missing young girl lacks momentum. The exotic setting of Patagonia, which could have added some charm, unfortunately contributes nothing.
Oh yes: the cat is very cute, mind you!!!
It’s worth noting that La Corazonada (Intuition) is a prequel to this film, in which Pipa, the police inspector, is working on her first major case whilst investigating her boss, who is suspected of murder.
