Alone at Night (2023) Some titles sound the same! Don’t confuse this film with “On The Beach At Night Alone (2017)” or with “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)”, which sounds like an Iranian vampire film! Just goes to show… anything really is possible! I haven’t seen any of these films, but perhaps I’ll remedy that one day. There’s even a “Seule dans la nuit” (Wait Until Dark) starring Audrey Hepburn made in 1967 that looks interesting for old film buffs. Anyway! I find it hard to judge this “Alone at Night”. Overall, I had a great time. But let’s be realistic: can a film featuring Pamela Anderson AND Paris Hilton be a masterpiece? Of course not! And that’s sad. Even seeing Winnie Harlow was a sign of things to come! No pun intended. As a reminder, this is the model from Canada who suffers from vitiligo, a skin depigmentation. She still lives in Canada and made her name by taking part in America’s Next Top Model USA at the age of 19. All of which is to say that when a model makes it to the big screen, it’s rarely spectacular or truly memorable! The story is about a young woman who, after going through a difficult and tumultuous break-up, retires to a friend’s isolated cabin in the woods to clear her head and recharge her batteries, without stopping her work on an adult website. Vicky is a cam girl, selling dreams and fantasies from her webcam. But when the power goes out, she soon discovers that she’s not alone. She discovers something terrifying waiting for her in the darkness – a masked killer who is determined to put an end to her macabre night and is out to terrorise her. I’m pretty proud of my little summary, because it really makes you want to see this film. Unfortunately, however, it’s a little late: it’s just been released in 2023 and is still set in the Covid period. What’s more, there’s absolutely nothing original about the killer’s motives or methods when you’re used to this kind of film. Once again, as I regularly say: if this is your first film in this genre, you’re in for a treat! If not, you’ll be happy to know that I’m telling you to move on, whether it’s in the snow or not. The actors are relatively decent, but it’s the characters that are rather annoying. Ashley Benson is pretty good (or, in any sense of the word!) in this role. She’s not bad at all. I’m pleased to see the tiny role of the excellent singer Sky Ferreira too. And I have to admit that I was very pleased to see Luis Guzmán again, also in a mini-role. The film’s pace is constantly broken by interventions from a Reality Show presented and directed by Paris Hilton (of course!) and this regularly makes the film sink into a bit of a bore. As for Pamela Anderson, she plays the sheriff! Can you believe it? As far as I’m concerned… No Comment! That said, there’s a moment when she makes fun of her legendary slow-motion running. The film isn’t worth seeing just for that, but it’s a good little moment.
